Life still thrives even when drastically challenged. This old tree, in an Appalachian mountain meadow,
sprouts branches and foliage in spite of its top being broken away.
My, that's relentless determination!

Many trees have this ability, to grow back even when severely damaged. According to the environmentalist, George Monbiot, it's an adaptation to the damage caused by elephants and other mega-fauna. Although the big animals have disappeared from temperate regions the trees still retain this habit.
