American's urge to go West is deeply ingrained in our psyche since explorers and pioneers started the trend in the late 1700's. So it is appropriately symbolic that the walking man on this sign is under the arch, on the go, and heading westward! |

ReplyDeleteInterestingly the medieval mind thought that west was the direction of death. The expression that something had "gone west" meant that it was lost forever, probably this comes from viewing the setting sun each day. Your pedestrian looks thoroughly modern however so should make it over the crossing OK!
