Boulder Scattered Tidal Zone, near Seawall, Acadia National Park, Maine © Doug Hickok All Rights Reserved (Click on image for larger view)
A boulder strewn intertidal zone is exposed at low tide along a misty Maine coast. Growing abundantly here is a seaweed called rock wrack, more commonly known as rockweed. It is also known more indelicately as bladder wrack.
These mats of thick rock wrack are quite wet and slippery, so this hazardous tidal zone is no place to test your track and field skills... for if you do, you are very likely to encounter a most nerve wracking experience.

Really very impressive these curious dévoreuses seaweeds. We have too in Brittany a variety of green seaweeds which are polluting and even dangerous for the health of animals and people.
ReplyDeletePhoto that provide some texture and original, good photo Doug

Your thought-provoking photograph matches perfectly the concerns you depict with your words. Love the muted colors and the gloomy feel.
ReplyDeleteNice photo and explanation. Love the textures and patterns made by the seaweed and terrain.
ReplyDeleteA treacherous landscape Doug. Have to hold your camera tight around here.
ReplyDeleteThis photo could be from some parts of our coastline here in North East England, though I haven't found any spots with quite this much seaweed yet. It's a very nice gentle image that evokes a lovely sense of place.
ReplyDeleteWonderful find and very atmospheric shot Doug! I could almost smell it! Love your light and natural tonality!
ReplyDeleteso beautiful, doug.

Interesting textures... and cold looking...
ReplyDeleteLike a moving ground !
ReplyDeleteawesome shot
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the rock pools growing when I was a kid that would be covered in seaweed. Super slippery stuff. My foot would slip into a rock pool with some huge looking creature in it and I'd be completely freaked out. Either that or I'd slip and land on my butt getting scraped by barnacles in the process. Love this shot.

Well Doug you know what they say..."A pun is the lowest form of humour - unless you think of it yourself."
ReplyDeleteLove the almost tangible textures--I've walked plenty on this abominable stuff (and by walked I of course mean lurched comically).
ReplyDeletethis photo captures much of the essence of the atlantic sea coast and of acadia in particular - the boulders, the sea weed, the mist ... this is as it should be, no sun needed !!!
ReplyDeletea scene during lowtide? wow, that's pretty neat.. nice catch!
ReplyDeleteExcellent scene and a great rendering of textures. Nicely seen, and done!
