The Moor You Look, The Moor You See

Fox Theater, Atlanta, Georgia  © Doug Hickok

On our road trip, we saw Hemingway and Dali in Ohio, Van Gogh in Alabama, a knight in shining armor in Kentucky, and the sinking Titanic in Tennessee, so it is not too surprising that we saw a Moorish mosque in Georgia. In fact, this is the famous Fox Theater of Atlanta. Conceived as a Shriner's temple in the 1920's, the Fabulous Fox was ultimately fashioned into a renown movie palace, which thrived through the 1930's and 40's. In recent decades, it has served as a performing arts venue, and the center piece of the surrounding historic district. If you look closely you will notice the beautiful ornate detailing of the facade and arcade, reminiscent of Moorish architecture.

  1. First of all, I LOVE the title's play on words! :) Well done.

Secondly, I have sat in that theater for many a show over the years and can attest to the stunning workmanship there. I never would have believed your image was from there, but after reading your text, I can see it. Well done!

  3. I'm guessing OTHELLO is a regular part of their repertoire.

  6. what a trip you had, and what great places you visited! as to this image - i first thought it was from the alhambra in granada, spain! it looks very authentic to me - not like the fake places they've built in las vegas in the last years! and what an interesting story behind the building! i'm glad they've found some use for it as it would definitely be a shame to see it demolished, like so many other places ...
(thanks very much for your visits and comments during my absence, doug! it is always a pleasure and great fun to read what you have to say, and i'm daily looking forward both to your post and your comment!)

  12. Ha, D!
The Moor I come here, the Moor I learn from you, mate.
Have you been to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain?
That's probably the most beautiful Moorish building in the world.

If I had not read your note I would have believed it was in Marrakesh!
lovely symmetrical composition with fine chromatic contrast white/red, and of course the embroidery of this architecture always strike the eye.
    Well done,
    Donato
