Letters to Sala

Placards, Old Town, Krakow, Poland  © Doug Hickok
(Velvia slide film)

One of the amazing stories to come from Holocaust survivors is the story of Sala. Beginning as a 16 year old, she spent five years in seven different labor camps. Remarkably, she was able to hide over 300 letters, post cards and photographs from the authorities, documents that told the story of her young life.

If you would like to read further about her story, here is the link.

  2. Thanks so much for this Doug--wonderful post. My grandfather was in Buchenwald for 18 months. He was captured as a member of the Belgian resistance. He came out 90 lbs but by his own admission he and the other resistance fighters were treated worlds better than the Jewish prisoners.

  8. so sad, yet so uplifting as well! their stories need to be told again and again - lest we should forget (which is exactly what some have done and are doing)!
