Pock Marked Wall from the Hungarian Revolution of 1956,
Castle Hill, Budapest, Hungary © Doug Hickok
Modern civilization is built on revolution...
American, French, Bolshevik, Chinese, Iranian, Arab, Agricultural, Scientific, Industrial, Technological... just to name a few.
Where would we be today without mankind's will to revolt against oppression,
or conventional wisdom?

So many vital moments in our history required the unthinkable courage. I constantly wonder if I'd have been at the front of the pack or cowering in the back. I guess I won't know unless there's a revolution around the corner for us.
ReplyDeleteI love this shot Doug--great composition, texture and light but the very real remnants of history left by these pockmarks is quite gripping.
Lovely post Doug. Increasing levels of intelligence really does change the world!
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy your daily posts

J'aime ces couleurs chaudes un peu délavées et l'ambiance que ta photo véhicule.

I had schoolfriends who had come to live in England "to get away from the fighting in their own country" as we were told. This image makes real their plight and the dilemma which must have faced their parents.
ReplyDeletethe echo of diagonals and the tension they create make this a perfect little post, doug.
ReplyDeletean interesting document-photo, Doug!
ReplyDeleteWow, Doug. Very well said and shown. Thanks for the reminder!

Nice image today and words. Better to stand for what you believe in than live on your knees.
ReplyDeleteanother window! i consider this a personal gift from you to me ;-))
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, there are still lots of such houses in hungarian towns, showing not only the traces of the revolution, but even of world war two. for 50 years there was no money for and no incentive to restore these houses. thus they have become a kind of living history museum. (even though much has changed in the last 20 years ...)
Excellent color, composition and shadows.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely composed image and beautiful diagonal.
ReplyDeleteAgustín.
I still like to think of a peaceful protest !!!!!!! The picture is really awesome !!!!!

This is very nice indeed - love the genteel shabbiness with the bullet pockmarks, and the diagonal shadow is a great touch.
ReplyDeleteEncore to those well chosen words Doug. Composed with perfect framing - and I love the shadow.
