A Long Hike in the Woods

Appalachian Trail, Roan Mountain, North Carolina  © Doug Hickok  All Rights Reserved

A smooth graveled section of the Appalachian Trail

passes through a spruce fir forest along the crest of Roan Mountain.
From here, one could walk north to Maine, or south to Georgia.
Either way, it would be a long, long, long hike in the woods.

  6. Great colour and serene atmosphere. I love the depth to the photograph with the details on the tree at the front drifting to the dense forest beyond.

  7. Doug, Come walk the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania--notorious for being the roughest section of the entire trail. I don't think there's a smooth section of the trail like this in PA except where the trail comes out of the mountains and follows roads for a short distance. Most of our part of the trail is an ankle-turner.

  11. So unfair that the US States are so great. ;o)
So many yak's years will it take for me to walk from coast to coast?
    You have a good weekend.
It's gonna be another grey day here tomorrow. :(

  12. If you're gonna do the walk then a read of "A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail" by Bill Bryson will entertain, amuse and inform. Meanwhile an excellent image.
