Castle Pinckney

On the isolated island of Shutes Folly, in Charleston Harbor, lies the overgrown ruins of Castle Pinckney. Although not a real castle, it was a small fortress built in 1810 to help guard the city from naval threat.

It was briefly revived as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War. But mostly the fort has been abandoned for long periods of time, fading into the obscurity of history.

  1. (sigh) Fading into history. Just yesterday I was mentioning to Astrid that there is so much history we will never know (we had just seen "Les Miserables" in the theater)! In the meantime, this is a lovely mood for contemplation.

  3. Magnificent colours and depth of field Doug. The Island seems to be like the fading history described in your text. Cheers J.

  7. Stunning--love your choice to focus on the sun's reflection in the foreground rather than on the castle itself--great effect to accentuate the feeling of blurring into history.
