Piazza, Palazzo Ducale, Venice, Italy © Doug Hickok Although at first glance this may remind you of Las Vegas, it is actually not. A Gothic piazza along the side of the Palace of the Doge, in Venice, Italy, presents a nice example of line, shape and pattern, complements of the 14th century architect, Filippo Calendario. These 3 elements, along with light, color and texture (see September 22nd's post), are a photographer's best friend. Where ever you see them, there is potentially a wonderful photograph to be made, eh? |
You have captured all of those elements in this one great photo Doug.... i was told by a guide in Athens that people of the mountains build like men with straight line and round arches....and people by the seas build like women.... and here is the proof with all of these beautiful curved arches found in Venice..... it is a fine composition....peter:)

Nice shot of some cool architecture today.
ReplyDeletevenice - truly a photographer's delight! it's strange and slightly bewildering that anyone might first of all think of las vegas upon seeing this! but i guess that's a sign of the times we're living in - the fake is better-known than the original!!
ReplyDeletethanks so much for your most sympathetic words re emilia today, doug! we are very happy, of course, and can't wait to see her tomorrow!
(as to your "lagging behind" in visiting my blog - PLEAS don't let it stress you, by no means! this should be fun, not an obligation - though i thoroughly like and appreciate your visits and comments, and i value your opinion!)
Only one photo? I think you may have thousands...
ReplyDeleteThose 14th century architects certainly knew the art of style, a lovely shot to emphasize with their aims. And you're absolutely right Doug - light, colour and texture are the keys - although the first is probably the most important.
ReplyDeleteVenice is one of my favorite city ! Nice architecture Doug.
ReplyDeleteSo true Doug--one of my great regrets is that I was only half-hearted about photography when my wife and I traveled to Italy. I must return. Great light and negative space here.
