Cruise Ship Dilemma

Cruise Ship, Charleston Harbor, Charleston, SC  © Doug Hickok

A large cruise ship is docked along a pier in Charleston Harbor. The recent frequency of cruise ship visits has elevated tourism in Charleston, but a debate now rages over the pros and cons of their presence.

On the one hand, a fortune of tourist dollars is generated by the ships, but on the other hand the environmental impact of large boats in the harbor degrades flora and fauna, and the traffic generated around the waterfront disturbs local residents.

The Charleston Board of Architectural Review is working hard to find a solution to the problem, the ever elusive balance between quality of life and profit.

  1. This is a fantastic composition. I bet this dilemma is discussed in many places over the world. Never thought about in Charleston though so interesting point.

  2. Lovely framing here Doug. Several ports in the Canadian Maritime Provinces are struggling with this same problem. Good and bad for sure.

  3. Fantastic framing. I have been on 20 cruises in my life, but didn't know ships now dock in Charleston.

  4. Oh, wow. I sure would love to hear how they resolve that one, Doug! I'm afraid I'm one of the culprits, having had my share of several cruise voyages in my past life. I must say, however, that I'm becoming a bigger fan now of the smaller river-cruise boats.

Your image is delightful...while they figure out the pros and cons!

  5. Interesting question. I don't think I'd enjoy a cruise much though. I would, however, very much love to sit on this bench. Gorgeous composition.

  7. The giant beast of economics coming in to berth alongside the porch-swing of traditional values - a dilemma indeed. Great image.

  16. Awesome photo from an interesting angle! I'm sure that a good balance between the two issues is difficult to find. Unfortunately (sometime), this is the world we live on.

  17. What an amazing image - it really shows the scale of the cruise ship. I like the lighting incredibly and the colour combination of the yellow and blue hues are absolutely stunning!

  19. I like the subtle reference to the life of ease for the locals, disturbed by the life of ease enjoyed by the visiting seafarers. Well captured my friend.

  21. i bet the people whose bench this is enjoy the view! as to tourism, it's truly a two-sided thing, as the people who live in our mountain valley know only too well! it does bring in huge amounts of money, without which life would be a lot different, but it also has huge effects on the environment - most of them to its detriment, i am afraid! a modern dilemma, it seems!
