Chapel of Ease

Strawberry Chapel, Moncks Corner, SC  © Doug Hickok

Strawberry Chapel dates from 1725. It is a chapel of ease, which means it was built so citizens in the outlying parts of the parish could attend services without having to travel long distances to the main parish church.

It has been well preserved over the years and as with many old historic churches in rural areas, reports of strange happenings at night have given birth to ghost stories. These have sadly led to vandalism resulting in the property being made off limits to visitors.

    1. Chapel-of-Ease is a common Lowcountry reference to small colonial chapels which serves those far out in the country.

  4. It's a lovely place and interesting constructions. But the name is strange for such a place! Why strawberry?

    1. It’s affectionately called by its nickname, Strawberry Chapel (built 1725) but St. John’s Parish, Berkeley?is its proper name. It’s the Chapel-of-Ease to Biggin Church (now Biggin Ruins.

  5. It is a beautiful place. I captured a place like it but had to go under the fence and I took photos and left only footprints.
    Wonderful place.
