Amsterdam in Alabama

Patrons at the Amsterdam Cafe, Auburn, Alabama  © Doug Hickok

You know the global village is for real when you can visit Amsterdam in Alabama for a bite to eat. We spent our lunch one day at the Amsterdam Cafe in the small college town of Auburn, where we enjoyed some delicious food. I ordered a Dutch specialty from the menu... pizza... well, not because it is Dutch, but because I like pizza.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, we saw Vincent Van Gogh in Alabama. This is where we saw him...

Little did I know Van Gogh was such a big fan of Auburn football. I know Auburn won the college football national championship this year, but still, I envisioned Vincent more of a Tour de France guy.

  1. Lol, looks like a nice place too. For a second, seeing the first shot, I thought you were at a Pike Place Market café!

I prefer the second one (below) which in my view is more harmonious and interesting.
Surely a well captured image with those two couples dining and poor Vincent nailed at the wall... I don't think he would have been glad to be there though... (:-)

    Ciao,

  6. I love visiting bars and restaurants largely frequented by specific expats. It's fun to hang with Americans whose roots are from another place. Very cool post Doug

  11. I only learned recently that Van Gogh taught in Kent, in England - apparently to get over a failed romance.

The poor guy really had a hard time - hardly sold a painting during his life and now his pics sell for a fortune. Funny old life!

  14. Ha! Bet they didn't top your pizza with cannabis, D?!
Ah, you went to the wrong place.
Should be Amsterdam "Coffeeshop" not "Cafe".

Auburn, Van Gogh, Holland and the lampshades in the cafe...
I wonder if they all share something in common! Ha~
    You tell me.

  16. That would tickle me to no end, Doug, seeing ol' Vincent in an Auburn jersey! I've never seen the likes of it before. How fun. Now, if I could find him in a Michigan shirt, I might just have to buy it!!! :)

  17. It's pretty nice to be able to feel amsterdam-ish once in a while, even though you are far away from the Netherlands! I'll definitely check out the place if I drop by. Thanks!
