Go West XXVIII - Coke Ovens

Nature's marvelous talent for sculpture is put on full display in western Colorado. In Colorado National Monument, water, wind and frost erosion combined with varying degrees of rock hardness have created an unforgettable formation known as the Coke Ovens.

 This row of domed shaped monoliths took millions of years to form and resemble old fashion ovens used to burn coal to make coke. Not the soft drink of course, but one of the base materials used for making iron and steel.

Just beyond the Coke Ovens are the Squaw Fingers. I also see a toaster, flapjacks and a tall multilayered rum cake.
Hmmm, I have suddenly worked up an appetite.
Time to eat.
 I just hope I don't break a tooth.

    This is the best landscape photo of the Coke Ovens that i have ever seen Doug... you never do anything in a small way do you !... great sculptures right across the entire frame....peter:)

    That's a fine, fine picture of one of nature's wonders. No matter that I understand how these formations eveolved I'm always astounded at such beauty and oddness.

    Just beautiful Doug--amazing to think of the breadth of time necessary for the wind and elements to carve these monoliths. It's reminiscent of our recent trip to the Red Rocks. My kids had a blast finding familiar shapes in the rocks. Nature, it seems, really gets a kick out of Snoopy.

    these natural shapes and figures offer so many possibilities of interpretation! i find them intriguing and fascinating, and if i try i can see some of the things you "saw" ... but not the toaster, alas !! ;-)
